The accelerated program provides a fast-track route to becoming a registered nurse by building on the LPN’s previous academic knowledge and clinical experience. This intensive program allows students to earn an AS in Nursing in just 12 months.*
The curriculum begins with two condensed, six-week courses beginning in Summer Session I, that require in-person lectures, labs, and clinical experiences in hospital acute patient care units. Condensed coursework is scheduled for 2-4 days/week. After successful completion of these summer courses, students receive prior learning credits. General education credits required for program completion must be earned before or during the 12-month program to meet graduation requirements.
Prospective students are encouraged to complete general education courses before enrolling in the summer start nursing program. While completing these courses during the Spring semester, applicants will either remain non-matriculated or stay in their current degree program awaiting an admission decision, typically made in March.
For recommendations, refer to the "First Semester" section of the program sequence in the catalog. Propsective students who have already completed the "First Semester" recommendations may continue to enroll in other required general education courses for the program in the Spring. If all required general education courses are completed after the application deadline, no coursework is required while awaiting an admission decision.
The accelerated program is demanding, with a fast pace and rigorous course load. Success requires a significant time commitment for study and learning. Nursing courses must be taken in the specific order listed in the catalog, however general education/liberal arts courses can be completed in any sequence, depending on prerequisites, as long as they are finished within the 12-month program completion timeframe.
*Applicants who will not have completed general education courses required for program completion before enrollment in the summer accelerated nursing courses are encouraged to apply to the traditional RN program. In the traditional program, nursing courses are spread over four semesters without summer session requirements allowing more time to complete general education requirements.
The accelerated nursing program has a limited number of seats available, so admission is competitive. Be sure to complete all application requirements on time to be considered. Admission decisions are based on a rubric that evaluates student performance. Applicants to the Accelerated LPN-RN Program may receive up to 10 additional bonus points on their admission score. More details can be found under "How to Apply - Admission Rubrics."
To be considered for bonus rubric points, Accelerated LPN-RN applicants must submit:
1.Official transcript verifying graduation from an accredited, credit bearing LPN program within 5 years of application deadline (if applicable)
2. A current LPN employment verification letter from a Human Resources Official verifying consecutive employment in acute care (hospital) as an LPN within 5 years of application deadline (if applicable). Sub-acute, long term care and other settings of LPN current employment ineligible for bonus points. Letter must include: Hospital Name, Unit/Floor of employment and start date as an LPN, using this verification template. Submit the form to first choice campus by the application deadline to:
