Institutional Review Board
As an institution of higher education, Suffolk County Community College values research
performed for a variety of purposes, especially that which enhances student learning.
The College also is committed to safeguarding the welfare, rights, and privacy of
all persons who participate as subjects in research projects, and to ensuring that
the subjects of such research are aware of their rights and the protections available
to them. In compliance with federal regulations, the College maintains an Institutional
Review Board (IRB) to review all research requests to make sure they conform to human
subject protection standards. No research activity utilizing human subjects may take
place at the College without undergoing examination by the Institutional Review Board.
Overseen by faculty and professionals in fields of social/scientific research, Suffolk
County Community College’s IRB is housed in the Office of Planning and Institutional
Effectiveness (OPIE). Procedures and regulations are available on the OPIE webpages.
