Fall 2024 CTL Workshops

A stack of books and coffee cup on autumn leaves.

In this session, we will review how to copy content from one course to another, customize the course homepage, edit account settings, manage notifications, create a module and upload files. Pedagogical best practices will be discussed along the way.

Location: Zoom

Over the past several semesters, Fabio Montella, Associate Professor of Library Services and Adjunct Associate Professor of History, had given students in his history courses a 7-step research paper assignment designed to eliminate academic dishonestly while promoting strong research skills. Though this process produced positive results, he quickly realized that it had become “tainted” by the emergence of Artificial Intelligence. To address this concern, Fabio revamped the assignment to make AI a central component of the process. The initial results have shown great success and promise for future growth. In this presentation, he will share his pre-AI and post-AI approaches while examining both. This session is appropriate for faculty across all disciplines who create writing assignments. Did you know that Brightspace has many integrated accessibility tools? In this session, we review how these tools can be used to improve the accessibility of text, paragraphs, pictures, videos, uploaded documents,
and more.

Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) in an asynchronous online course requires instructors to interact with students in predictable and meaningful ways and to provide individualized feedback on the course subject matter throughout the semester. In this workshop we discuss why RSI is important and ways to self-assess to make sure this requirement is met by teaching faculty. Bring any questions, comments, or concerns.
Facilitators: Robin Hill, PhD and Carol Hernandez, EdD

In this session, we’ll discuss UDL and how to use it as a framework for designing courses. UDL helps instructors focus on the student experience and to anticipate barriers to learning. This is considered an approach that is inclusive of all learners. To preview the concepts, visit the CAST website: https://udlguidelines.cast.org/

Attending this workshop is the first step to being certified to teach in the Sufflex modality at Suffolk. The second step is to successfully complete the asynchronous, self-paced Sufflex certification course in Brightspace.

“Sufflex” is the name for the HyFlex teaching modality modified for Suffolk. Instructors teach students who are on-campus, in person, while simultaneously live streaming to a cohort of students who are remote. There are dedicated Sufflex classrooms on each campus. This workshop will provide technical instruction and effective strategies to engage with students in this modality. Please note: Prior to registering, you should contact your academic chair about your intention to participate.

We will use the “Manage Grades” tool to set up a grade book and then investigate how to correct common issues that might be encountered. You will learn how to associate an assessment with a grade item, and also how to review your student’s grades individually and post feedback.

Learn how to develop video lectures using YuJa and implement retrieval practice as an educational learning strategy. This method involves actively recalling information, which subsequently improves and strengthens learning. The intentional act of retrieving knowledge compels us to access and evaluate our understanding.  When learning online, adding low stakes no stakes quiz questions in between and at the end of a lecture allow students to improve their comprehension of new information.
