About the IRACDA CAPS Award
Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award
(New York Consortium for the Advancement of Postdoctoral Scholars)
IRACDA CAPS is a fellowship program for postdoctoral scholars funded by the NIH's National Institute of General Medical Sciences.
Scholars advance their teaching skills and research experience during a 3-year mentored fellowship at Stony Brook University and at minority-serving NY-CAPS Partner Institutions:
- Suffolk County Community College
- CUNY Brooklyn College
- SUNY College at Old Westbury
Program Benefits
The program promotes consortia between research-intensive institutions and partner institutions that have a historical mission and a demonstrated commitment to providing training, encouragement and assistance to students from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral research enterprise of the nation.
The IRACDA NY-CAPS program combines a traditional mentored postdoctoral research experience with an opportunity to develop academic skills, including teaching, through workshops and mentored teaching assignments at a partner institution.
The program is intended to facilitate the progress of postdoctoral candidates toward research and teaching careers in academia and to promote linkages between partner institutions that can lead to further collaborations in research and teaching.
Faculty at Suffolk County Community College provide teaching mentorships and oversee teaching experiences for URM post-doctoral scholars in the STEM disciplines visiting from Stony Brook University. The goal of the project at Suffolk County Community College is to pave the way for increased diversity amongst Suffolk County Community College faculty and allow URM Suffolk County Community College undergraduate students to see themselves more represented in the faculty body.
