Goose Stepping on Long Island: Camp Siegfried - Exhibit Explores Nazi Bund Activity Before and Leading to WWII

The Long Island nexus of Nazi Bund activity before and leading up to World War II is the subject of the exhibit Goose Stepping on Long Island: Camp Siegfried at Suffolk County Community College’s Eastern Campus now through March 31 in the Montaukett Learning Resource Center’s Lyceum Gallery it was announced by The Suffolk Center on the Holocaust, Diversity & Human Understanding, Inc.

The remarkable pictures in this exhibit depict a darker side of Long Island, with photos of goose stepping American Nazis in Yaphank and a map of Brookhaven Town with streets like Hitler Way and Goering Street. The public is invited to view this historical snapshot and attend a free talk by Professor Steven Klipstein. Special tours for groups can be arranged through the Center by calling 631-451-4700.

Camp Siegfried took on added significance recently when the neighborhood that was built where the camp was located, German Gardens, became the subject of an investigation by the NYS Attorney General for violation of housing discrimination laws. It was alleged, in a federal lawsuit that was recently settled, that the German-American Settlement League, which owns the land, has been restricting home ownership to persons of German extraction. While covenants so restricting sales of homes are unenforceable, it has been alleged that other means have been used to discriminate.

The exhibit is on loan from the Harriet and Kenneth Kupferberg Holocaust Center and Archives at Queensboro Community College.
