Suffolk's Culinary Knowledge Bowl Team Second in Nation
The Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts Knowledge Bowl Team placed second
in the nation at the American Culinary Federation National Culinary Knowledge Bowl
in Kansas City on Sunday July 27.
The competition is based on a student's culinary knowledge in a Jeopardy format.
A team had to win the regional competition to qualify. Suffolk students won the Eastern
Division. Other regional team winners included Lake Washington College representing
the Western Division, Kendall College representing the Northern division and Guilford
College representing the Southern Division. Suffolk bested Kendall College to reach
the finals and competed against Guilford College.
Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun McKay commended the team for
it's impressive showing. "Congratulations! Suffolk's Culinary Arts Knowledge Bowl
Team is an inspiration to us all as they continue to demonstrate the great work, training
and education that is taking place in our culinary program," Dr. McKay said. 'The
team is an inspiration to us all."
“Clearly the combination of our team’s excellent academic preparation, culinary talents
and hard work was hard to miss at this prestigious national competition. Our entire
learning community is delighted at their success,” said Suffolk County Community
College Eastern Campus Executive Dean Dorothy J. Laffin.
The American Culinary Federation, Inc. (ACF), a professional, organization for chefs
and cooks, was founded in 1929 in New York City to promote the professional image
of American chefs worldwide through education of culinarians at all levels.
The Culinary Arts and Hospitality Center at Suffolk County Community College is widely
recognized as the premier culinary instructional facility on Long Island and features
28,000-square-feet of space, with state-of-the-art kitchen facilities. The Center
is located on Main Street in Riverhead.
