The 1994 Genocide In Rwanda: Woman Who Lost Family to Speak at Suffolk

Jacqueline Murekatete was almost 10 years old when her immediate family was murdered during the Rwanda genocide that claimed an estimated 500,000 to 1 million lives from April to mid-July, 1994.

Jaqueline will speak at Suffolk County Community College on April 24, 2014 to reflect on the 20th anniversary of the genocide, how that event could happen and how Rwanda has moved to reconcile with the atrocities of the past.

Jaqueline came to the United States to live with a distant relative, grew up in Queens, attended Stony Brook University, graduated from NYU, then attended Cardozo School of Law and became an attorney.

She has been speaking about her experience and using her insight to promote human rights and genocide prevention for the last 13 years.

Nelson Mandela, who became the leader of nearby South Africa, stood for seeking both justice and reconciliation following the end of apartheid in his country.

This year the world mourned his passing.  Dr. Shimelis Gulema, of Ethiopia, will speak about Dr. Mandela, “Before President, Beyond Prisoner.”  Dr. Gulema is an assistant professor of Africana Studies at Stony Brook University and he has a Ph.D. in African History from UCLA.
