Heroin: Pair to Discuss Addiction Epidemic and the Future

More than 50,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2015 — the most ever, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
 
What can be done? How do we stop it?
 
Dr. Frank Maletz and Coach Jim Spellman discuss the epidemic, the science of addiction, the drug sources, and the future at a special gathering at Suffolk County Community College on Thursday April 20, 2017, 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m., at the Michael J. Grant Campus’ Health Sports and Education Center, room MD105.
 
The program, Heroin Epidemic, Broken and Losing, Time is Running Out features Dr. Frank Maletz, a CACS Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon who has taken on a second career as a American Medical Practices and Facilities Futurist and become a pioneer in advocating for cautionary prescribing of opioid medications. Dr. Maletz was among the first to speak out about the use of opioid prescription abuse/addiction to street Heroin.
 
Coach Jim Spellman was a classroom teacher of English and American History and a highly successful high school football coach. He concluded his career in education as an administrator specializing in active shooter/emergency response protocols and policies. The deaths of former students by Heroin led him to lead volunteer awareness and education programs. In January of 2017, Spellman traveled to Afghanistan to investigate Heroin at its primary source.
