Message from the Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dear Students,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Suffolk County Community College! Building upon a rich tradition of teaching excellence and high academic standards, our diverse and talented faculty and staff are devoted to ensuring that each student enrolled at the College receives an exceptional education experience. As a learning community that is committed to encouraging students to come to a full understanding of themselves, our society, and the world, the College offers more than 70 academic degree programs and 30 certificate programs. I am confident that among these options you will find a course of study that will match your career aspirations and spark your interest.

We have an amazing faculty of over 480 full-time and 1,700 adjunct members with degrees from exceptional institutions of higher education located across the country and around the globe, who have come to the College in order to teach and provide our students with the foundation for an expanded world view. These faculty members, experts in their content areas, are adept at fostering critical thinking skills across disciplines, driving creative curricular development, assessing academic programs, and completing accreditation activities. As a result of their expertise, our academic community is vibrant and actively engaged in supporting students as they work to master the expected material, advance their knowledge and form an appreciation for lifelong learning.

Suffolk County Community College is the largest community college in the State University of New York (SUNY) system. As such, we understand the multiple demands on your time and know that community college students are more likely to work two or more jobs, while meeting family obligations, possibly raising families of their own, and simultaneously completing their degree requirements. We've witnessed the challenges faced by our student body and we have developed a wide array of services and resources that generate the academic support necessary for students to consistently realize success in the classroom, laboratory, and online. As College President Dr. Shaun McKay frequently states, "Through education, comes transformation and economic empowerment." I am certain that finding the path that leads to your destiny starts by enrolling at Suffolk.

Sincerely,
Suzanne M. Johnson, Ph.D.
